The X6 was created to validate the concept of high duration solar-powered ocean voyages. Since then, it has served as an R&D platform, carrying various payloads on test missions.

The X6 is less production-friendly and has more complicated launch and recovery logistics than later models, but it has a large payload capacity.

Thanks to the quick-swap modularity common across Seasats platforms, the X6 can use the same electronics and software stacks used on other platforms.
